Major Youth Projects Announced

The Rotary Club of Comber has just announced a new initiative for the youth of the Greater Comber area. At a meeting of the club this week Celine Gervin, Rotary District Youth Activities chair, announced that the Youth Leadership Award scheme was so successful that it is to be extended to promoting more Rotary sponsored youth activities in schools and in the community.

It is proposed that young people be encouraged to set up an “Interact” club in their school or community. This is in effect a junior Rotary club run by youth and for youth. The aims of these clubs will be to promote the building of confidence, fellowship and achievement. The clubs will be set up under the guidance of the Rotary Club of Comber but be independent. Interact Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single-gender or mixed, as well as large and small. The membership base can be drawn from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools from the same community.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two service projects, one a 'home' project to benefit their school or local community, and one an 'away' project to benefit people abroad and to further international understanding and goodwill.

Through their projects, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs. In the process, Interactors develop leadership skill and learn the value of hard work and boost their CV’s. As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 8,600 Interact clubs in some 110 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon.

It is anticipated that the Interact clubs will encourage young people to travel to other countries using the Youth Exchange schemes already available. There are also Camps for training in life skills and leadership.

Full details of “Interact” and indeed all rotary sponsored youth activities are to be found by logging onto www.youthribi.org

Celina asked Comber Rotarians to make contact with the young people in the Greater Comber Area to promote this new initiative.
