From Cosmetics To Cookers: Don’t Chance Safety

Whether it’s selling cosmetics or distributing cookers, the message to businesses is not to chance their customers’ safety.

‘Don’t’ Chance It’ is a new guide for any business which makes, distributes or sells products such as toys, furniture, electrical goods, tyres, prams, nightwear, children’s clothing, cookers and cosmetics and aims to help prevent some of the 750,000 accidental injuries which occur in the UK as a result of unsafe products.

The guide outlines the regulations that apply to certain types of products, providing advice on labelling, warnings and standards, as well as general tips, information and useful contact numbers for organisations which can offer further assistance.

Produced by local councils in Northern Ireland, in response to requests from the small business sector, ‘Don’t Chance It’ is easy to use and understand, according to Deirdre McCartan, Environmental Health Officer with Ards Borough Council:

“Any responsible manufacturer, distributor or retailer wants to supply safe products and this guide is a simple, but effective starting point for businesses to help ensure that they are meeting all the relevant requirements,” said Ms McCartan. “It also explains the role of Environmental Health in protecting the public from unsafe goods and helping businesses to avoid committing offences”.

Copies of the ‘Don’t Chance it’ booklet are available from Environmental Health at Ards Borough Council, Tel: 028 9182 4052 and can also be downloaded from the Council’s web site at www.ards-council.gov.uk.
