Comber Greenway

Sustrans has received major funding from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development through the EU Programme for Building Sustainable Prosperity to extend the National Cycle Network throughout County Down. The National Cycle Network is a 10,000 mile comprehensive network of safe and attractive routes to cycle and walk throughout the UK.

The Comber Greenway is an 8 mile section of the network being developed by Sustrans along the old Belfast to Comber railway line. The path provides a surprisingly green corridor all the way from the heart of East Belfast to Comber. There are views of Stormont and of Scrabo Tower but the most remarkable feature is the feeling of rural escape from the urban bustle of East Belfast.

Beginning at Dee Street and passing by the C S Lewis statue at the Holywood Arches, a safe crossing has been put in place to take walkers and cyclists to the 8 miles of traffic-free path. There are many places to enter and exit the path making it very accessible for the neighbourhoods it passes through. The path provides local people with a safe environment for leisure walking and cycling while at the same time offering the commuting cyclist a direct traffic-free route.
