During the recent heavy rains, a number homes and businesses in the Borough were flooded causing hardship for many people. However, the proactive and immediate response from Ards Borough Council was able to limit the damage and offer residents some much needed help and support, through the distribution of 500 sand bags.
Speaking after the distribution, Jonathon Bell, Chairman of the Council Services Committee said “We were delighted with the smooth and effective way our staff supported and helped the local people involved. Floodwater poses a serious risk to public health, which we were able to reduce dramatically by the speed and efficiency of our staff and support systems.”
“Should there be further heavy rain and a need for sandbags, for example, they will be available and distributed. Any one in difficulty should contact the Council on (028) 9182 4052,” he added.
In addition, the Department of the Environment has allocated £1,000 for each home flooded, regardless of whether, or not, there was insurance cover on the property. A number of inspections have already been undertaken, over the weekend, and payments were made on Wednesday (20th June)
In order to receive the £1,000 entitlement for flood damaged property, those affected in the area should call (028) 9182 4052 and an officer from the Council will inspect the property to ascertain if a payment may be made.
