Resolve to recycle Christmas cards and packaging!
Now the New Year is here, it’s time to think about recycling the cards and packaging gathered up over the festive period. Ards Borough Council is urging local people to think about their blue bins, recycling centres, bottle banks and the new tetra-pak bank, at North Road Household Recycling Centre, as the way to deal with appropriate Christmas waste.
Use your Blue bin for Christmas cards (except those with glitter, fabric or electrical parts) and for cardboard packaging (remove any plastic bits). Also sweet and biscuit tins, rinsed food tins, drinks cans and plastic bottles (not plastic food trays and packaging) should go into your blue bin.
Wrapping paper cannot be recycled through blue bins, so it’s also important to try and cut down on the amount of waste we produce in the first place, as Councillor Robin Drysdale, Mayor of Ards explains: “We all should help to reduce waste and re-use items all year long, whether by using a ‘bag for life’ or choosing goods with as little packaging as possible. When we buy gifts we can do even more, for example, think about putting presents in Gift bags for next Christmas and for other occasions. They can be re-used, so help reduce the problem of wrapping paper, which can’t be recycled. Also, if we can avoid wrapping some gifts, we can make a real difference to the amount of waste we make in the first place”.
Recycling centres should be used for recycling your real tree, where it will be turned into valuable compost, throwing it away generates an extra 320 tonnes of rubbish for landfill. You can also take your glass bottles and jars, including the

extra 20 million glass containers used over the Christmas period, to a recycling centre or bottle bank.
If you don’t have a blue or a brown bin, just order them! They’re free of charge, delivered to your home and collected every fortnight. There are also seven recycling centres in Ards, open from 8am – 4.30pm, Mon-Fri, and 8am – 4pm on Saturdays during the winter. These are located at:
North Road, Newtownards
Moss Road, Ballygowan
Glen Link, Comber
Railway Street, Donaghadee
Parsonage Road, Kircubbin
Moss Road, Millisle, and
Coach Road, Portaferry
During 2007, the Council established 21 new bottle bank sites across the Ards, to make it even more convenient to recycle glass bottles and jars.
