Nominate Women Of Achievement Now!

Local people are being encouraged to mark the achievements of women in Ards by nominating someone they know for an award.

Organised by Ards Borough Council, the ‘Women of Achievement’ award scheme was launched last year and now aims to recognise the successes, progress and attainments of local women on an annual basis across four categories – women in the community, women of determination, inspirational women and young women achievers.

“The categories are designed to reflect the diverse roles women play and the variety of responsibilities they have in our society, many of which, however, still go unnoticed or unrecognised. These awards aim to change that and to celebrate women and what they do at a range of levels, whether in a professional or personal capacity, voluntary or paid, young or old,” said Ards Councillor Michelle McIlveen, who is also one of the Northern Ireland Local Government Association’s Women’s Champions. “I would urge anyone who knows a deserving woman to take the time to nominate her and would ask that people pay particular attention to the ‘Young Women Achiever’ category. Last year we had no nominations in the younger age range and I am certain we have young women in Ards who are already achieving a great deal and merit the encouragement that an award like this can give”.

The award categories are:

o Women in the Community
Women who have made a significant contribution to their communities through charity or voluntary work.

o Women of Determination
Women who have had to overcome significant adversity or challenge to make a difference or to succeed personally or professionally

o Inspirational Women
Women whose behaviour, actions, words or achievements, have inspired others.

o Young Women Achievers
For those aged between 16 and 25 (inclusive) who have already achieved a great deal, whether in their academic or working lives, in sport, in meeting personal challenges, in their contributions to their communities.
