Comber Now On ‘Highway To Health’

Comber is now officially on the ‘Highway To Health’ with two new walking routes being launched in the town.

Local people can now put their best feet forward on either of the signposted walks which begin at Comber Leisure Centre and follow a path to Comber Square with the prominent Gillespie Monument. Walk One then takes people onto Killinchy Street, along the Cheeryvalley Line, across the river and back into town via a treelined paths or the main footpath. Walk Two takes walkers from the Square into High Street, past the historic Presbyterian Church and former Andrews Mill to the bird sanctuary at Clattering Ford.

The ‘Highways To Health’ scheme, established by the Northern Ireland Chest, Heart & Stroke Association (NICHSA) and promoted by Ards Borough Council, aims to encourage people of all ages to walk for leisure and good health.

“Walking is a gentle, but very effective form of exercise that is suitable for a broad range of people and these ‘Highway To Health’ routes simply offer a structure for a walk with some sites of historic interest or natural beauty to enjoy on the way,” said the Mayor of Ards, Councillor Robin Drysdale. “We are delighted to be involved in the scheme and to see these walks in Comber join the other ‘Highways To Health’ which exist in Newtownards and Donaghadee.”

‘Highway To Health’ leaflets which outline the routes in word and map form, are available from the Council Offices, Ards and Comber Leisure Centres, Tourist Information Centres and other facilities.
